About

Hello. I'm Igor.

I tinker with vintage computers and build hardware. Sometimes that means figuring out an old disk format. Sometimes it means building a new mainboard for a phone from 1999. And sometimes I just want a piece of equipment to talk to Home Assistant.

Gears & Bytes is my workshop on the web: a home for the projects, the discoveries, and the notes that might save someone else a little time.

Find your way around

  • Projects is where you'll find the things I'm building.
  • The journal collects articles, investigations, and notes.
  • GitHub is where you'll find my public code.

About this site

This site takes its cues from the personal and engineering websites of 1998–2000: a compact directory, a readable page, and links that lead somewhere interesting.

I've kept things simple, with HTML 4.0 and older browsers in mind. No JavaScript, cookies, or tracking. On a small screen, you may need to scroll sideways.

Visiting from an old computer? You may need a proxy that can connect to modern HTTPS sites.
